Procurement of wheat in Punjab, Haryana reaches 125 lakh tonne

The procurement of wheat in state of Haryana and Punjab have reached nearly 125 lakh tonne (LT) of which over 76.5 LT of wheat has been procured till Friday in Punjab, while in Haryana, over 48 LT of wheat has been procured. The agriculture department in both states expects a bumper crop this year and Punjab has set a record procurement target of 140 LT while Haryana has set a record procurement target of 90 LT.

The wheat procurement had started in both states from April 01 this year, which provide nearly 70% of the total food grain (wheat and paddy) to the national kitty. The bulk stocks started arriving after the harvest festival of Baisakhi (April 13).

The district of Sangrur, Patiala and Ludhiana districts were leading in procurement operations in the state of Punjab while in Haryana, bulk of the procurement i.e. nearly 99% has been done by government agencies. Karnal, Sirsa and Kaithal districts were leading in procurement in Haryana.
