India’s milk production rises 4% to 230.58 MT in 2022-23

Production of milk, egg and meat in India has increased in 2022-23 over the past five years. Milk production rose 4% to 230.58 million tonnes (MT) in 2022-23 over the previous year. Egg output surged by 7% to 138.38 billion, while Meat production rose by 5% to 9.77 MT during 2022-23 over 2021-22. India's wool production increased 2% to 33.61 million kg during 2022-23. 

The total milk production in the country is estimated at 230.58 MT during 2022-23, registering a growth of 22.81% compared to the figures of 2018-19 when the output was 187.75 million tonnes. In past, the annual growth rates were 6.47% in 2018-19; 5.69% in 2019-20; 5.81% in 2020-21 and 5.77% in 2021-22. The highest milk-producing state during 2022-23 was Uttar Pradesh with a share of 15.72% of total milk production followed by Rajasthan (14.44%), Madhya Pradesh (8.73%), Gujarat (7.49%), and Andhra Pradesh (6.70%). In terms of annual growth rate (AGR), Karnataka with 8.76% topped the list, followed by West Bengal (8.65%) and Uttar Pradesh (6.99%) over the previous year. 

Egg production has been estimated at 138.38 billion in 2022-23, up 33.31% from 103.80 billion numbers in 2018-19. Egg output increased annually by 6.77% in 2022-23 over 2021-22. Andhra Pradesh is the largest egg producer with a share of 20.13%, followed by Tamil Nadu (15.58%), Telangana (12.77%), West Bengal (9.94%) and Karnataka (6.51%). In terms of AGR, the highest growth rate was recorded by West Bengal (20.10%) followed by Sikkim (18.93%) and Uttar Pradesh (12.80%). 

The total meat production in the country is estimated at 9.77 MT during 2022-23, a growth of 20.39% compared to 2018-19 figures when output was 8.11 MT. The total wool production in the country is estimated at 33.61 million kg during 2022-23, registering a negative growth of 16.84% compared to 2018-19 when output was 40.42 million kg.
