India’s captive, commercial coal mines to produce 145 MT coal in 2023-24

India is expected to produce 145 Million Tonnes (MT) of coal from captive/commercial coal mines during the year 2023-24, that would help bring down the country's import of fossil fuel. Total coal production from captive/commercial coal mines during April 1, 2023 to November 20, 2023 stood at around 80 MT indicating a Year-on-Year growth of 23% from the same period of FY 2022-23.

Meanwhile, government directed coal block owners to take necessary steps to operationalise mines that are at an advanced stage of commissioning. The coal ministry clarified that post-cancellation of 204 blocks in the year 2014, the mines are being put on auction via a ‘transparent’ mechanism. The clarification comes a day after Congress alleged that the Narendra Modi government reversed the long-standing policy of competitive auction for coal block allocation and gave away lucrative fields to the Adani Group.

The Ministry of Coal has plans to produce 1404 MT of coal by year 2027 and 1577 MT by year 2030, at current level production of about one billion tonne per annum. The coal to be supplied to domestic coal-based power plants is around 821 MT for the current year.
