Tea exports from India declines 4.93% in January to September period of 2023

Tea exports from India declined 4.93% to 157.92 million kg in first nine months of 2023 (January to September) as compared to 166.11 million kg. in January to September 2022. Tea exports primarily dropped from Assam and West Bengal. Exports from North India, comprising primarily the states of Assam and West Bengal, stood at 96.28 million kilogramme in first nine months of the current calendar year, as compared to 103.09 million kilogramme in the previous similar period.

In the southern region, shipments fell marginally by 2.19% to 61.64 million kg from January to September. During the entire calendar year 2022, tea exports from India stood at 231 million kg. The export scenario remains grim as shipments to Iran are uncertain due to payment issues. The Iran market constitutes nearly 20% of India's total tea exports, followed by the CIS group of countries.

In September 2023, government had exhorted tea producers across the country to improve quality for raising exports which has remained almost stagnant for more than a decade. The country's share in global tea exports has slipped from 42% to 12%.
