The government has permitted export of some specific quantity of Non- basmati white rice to five countries, which includes Comoros, Madagascar, Equatorial Guinea, Egypt and Kenya. The export is permitted through National Cooperative Exports (NCEL). NCEL was registered in January this year under the Multi-State Co-operative Societies Act, 2002.
Though export of non-basmati white rice were banned on July 20, 2023 to boost domestic supply, exports are allowed on the basis of permission granted by the government to other countries to meet their food security needs and on request.
The quantity notified for Comoros is 20,000 metric tonnes (MT), Madagascar (50,000 MT), Equatorial Guinea (10,000 MT), Egypt (60,000 MT) and Kenya (1,00,000 MT). Earlier, the government has permitted exports of 10,34,800 tonnes of non-basmati white rice to seven countries, including Nepal, Cameroon and Malaysia.
