'Beacon of hope’: PM Modi hails SC verdict upholding Article 370 abrogation

Prime Minister (PM) Narendra Modi today hailed the Supreme Court’s (SC) verdict upholding the government’s decision to abrogate Article 370 of the Constitution as ‘historic’. PM termed the verdict a beacon of hope, a promise of a brighter future, for the people of ‘Naya Jammu and Kashmir.’

PM Modi said ‘Today’s Supreme Court verdict on the abrogation of Article 370 is historic and constitutionally upholds the decision taken by the Parliament of India on 5th August 2019; it is a resounding declaration of hope, progress and unity for our sisters and brothers in Jammu, Kashmir and Ladakh. The Court, in its profound wisdom, has fortified the very essence of unity that we, as Indians, hold dear and cherish above all else.’ and said this gives a stamp of approval to the move as being ‘completely constitutional’. 

Meanwhile, Union Home Minister Amit Shah also welcomed the Supreme Court's decision upholding the abrogation and said that the ruling proved that the Central government's decision on August 5, 2019, was 'completely constitutional'. He said that growth and development have brought new meaning to human life in the valley, which was once torn by violence. Shah further added that under the leadership of PM Modi, the NDA government is committed to establishing lasting peace in Jammu, Kashmir and Ladakh and the all-round development of the region.

The apex court unanimously upheld the Centre's decision to abrogate provisions of the Article bestowing special status to the former state of Jammu and Kashmir. Additionally, the court mandated that the elections for the legislative assembly of Jammu and Kashmir be held by September 30, 2024.
