Asian markets settle mostly lower on Monday

18 Dec 2023 Evaluate
Asian markets settled mostly lower on Monday tracking a mixed Wall Street performance last Friday after New York Fed President John Williams pushed back against market bets of multiple rate cuts next year, reiterating the US Fed remains focused on bringing inflation down to its 2% target. Meanwhile, global investors were awaiting a key US inflation reading due later this week for more clarity on the US Federal Reserve’s interest rate path. Japanese shares declined with caution ahead of the conclusion of a key policy meeting by the Bank of Japan. Moreover, Chinese and Hong Kong markets fell due to renewed selling of property shares after China South City Holdings warned it can't pay interest due Wednesday as it races to win support from creditors to extend dollar bond deadlines.
