Leaders of the Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance (INDIA) bloc today staged a protest under the banner 'Save Democracy', at Jantar Mantar in Delhi. Many prominent leaders including Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, Mallikarjun Kharge, the head of the Nationalist Congress Party -Sharad Pawar, Sitaram Yechury of the CPI-M, and others are participated in the protest to express their disapproval of the suspension of 146 opposition MPs from the Parliament’s Winter Session.
Speaking at the protest by opposition parties organized at Jantar Mantar against the suspension of MPs, Rahul Gandhi alleged that by suspending opposition MPs in the recent winter session of Parliament, they were not only insulted but 60 percent of the people of the country were silenced. He said that the jumping of two youths from the audience gallery of the Lok Sabha into the House is definitely a lapse in security, but the reason for this is unemployment. Rahul Gandhi also said that the fight is between hatred and love. NCP Supremo Sharad Pawar said the opposition was ready to pay any price to save the democracy.
Meanwhile, Senior Congress MP Shashi Tharoor, who is one of the suspended MPs, said that the rally is to draw the attention of the public to the perilous situation facing our democracy. ‘Never in history, 146 MPs have ever been suspended. It is a blot on democracy,’ he added. CPI (M) leader Sitaram Yechury said, ‘We need to save the democracy from those who are currently in power. The BJP must be held accountable for the security breach incident in Parliament’.
Both Houses were adjourned sine die on Thursday, a day ahead of the scheduled ending of Parliament’s Winter session that saw a security breach, suspension of over 140 MPs and the expulsion of TMC leader Mahua Moitra in the ‘bribe-for-query’ case. The Winter session started on December 4 and was scheduled to conclude on December 22.
