Asian markets settled mostly down on Tuesday amid Japanese market remains closed until Thursday as the country assesses the damage from a powerful earthquake that rocked the central region on New Year's Day. Chinese shares dropped after mixed signals from China’s manufacturing sector. The Caixin China General Manufacturing Purchasing Managers’ Index (PMI) edged up to 50.8 in December from 50.7 the previous month. While the official reading showing activity contracted further in the month and weakened more than expected. Persisting concerns over the health of China's property sector also weighed on market sentiments. However, Seoul shares gained ahead of a slew of US data due this week.
