The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) today nominated Delhi Commission for Women (DCW) chief Swati Maliwal as its candidate for the January 19 Rajya Sabha (RS) elections and re-nominated Sanjay Singh and ND Gupta for a second term in the Upper House of Parliament.

The political affairs committee (PAC) of the party chaired by Delhi Chief Minister & Party Chief Arvind Kejriwal announced the nominations. The committee also accepted Sushil Gupta's request to allow him to ‘redirect his focus’ on the electoral politics in Haryana and in his place Maliwal was chosen. Sanjay Singh is currently lodged in jail in connection with Delhi excise policy-linked money laundering case. Singh sought permission from a Delhi court to sign his papers for re-nomination to the Rajya Sabha, which was granted by Special Judge M K Nagpal. His term is ending on January 27 and the last date of nomination is January 9. DCW chief Maliwal has been an active advocate for women’s rights and social issues. She was appointed Chairperson of DCW in 2015 and has been continuing in the post.

Meanwhile, lashing out at the AAP for re-nominating Singh for the RS seat, Delhi Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) secretary Harish Khurana said the Singh re-nomination has exposed AAP’s claims of honesty. Leader of the Opposition in the Delhi assembly, Ramvir Singh Bidhuri, said that instead of working for the people’s welfare, the AAP’s Rajya Sabha MPs wasted six years abusing Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Bharatiya Janata Party.

According to the election commission’s, the nominations for three RS seats for Delhi began on January 3 and the nominations will be scrutinised on January 10. The last date of withdrawal of candidature is January 12, and polling will take place on January 19 between 9am and 4pm.
