The Group of Ministers (GoM) has decided to discuss the ways to revive the two loss-making public sector telecom companies - BSNL and MTNL. Change in business environment and hyper competition in the telecommunication business, the financial position of BSNL and MTNL had deteriorated in the last three to four years. Further, the meeting of GoM regarding this is scheduled for May 10.
MTNL was set up by the Government of India to upgrade the quality of telecom services, expand the telecom network, and introduce new services and to raise revenue for telecom development needs of India's key metros -- Delhi and Mumbai.
