Government imposes 50% exports duty on molasses

16 Jan 2024 Evaluate

The government has levied 50% exports duty on molasses, resulting from the extraction or refining of sugar. The said export duty will applicable from January 18, 2024. Molasses is a by-product of sugarcane used as raw material for alcohol production.

The potential export duty is seen as a measure to address the shortage of sugarcane caused by erratic monsoon rains, prompting considerations to discourage molasses exports. It will play a pivotal role in boosting the availability of molasses for ethanol production. Production of ethanol has led to proportionate reduction in the import of petrol or crude oil which has resulted in saving of foreign exchange for India. In 2022-23, with production of about 502 crore litres of ethanol, India has saved about Rs 24,300 crore of foreign exchange and improved India’s energy security.

Meanwhile, the raw sugar, white sugar, refined sugar, and organic sugar are under export restrictions. Initially, the restrictions were imposed starting June 1 to October 31, 2022, and later extended until further orders.
