The Tata group and Norwegian telecom major Telenor have appointed merchant bankers to advise them on a possible strategic alliance between Uninor and Tata Teleservices, which may lead to merger or sale of equity in Tata Teleservices. While, Norwegian telecom major Telenor has hired Citibank; the Tatas have appointed Lazard to study all options for their telecom business. The combined entity, leading to the consolidation in telecom space, will be able to compete with Airtel, Reliance Jio, Reliance Communications, etc in both 3G and 4G areas.
Further, the merger assumes significance as getting the right partner is a top priority for the Tatas, given that NTT Docomo, the current joint venture partner in TTSL, is keen to exit from the Indian telecom business. Meanwhile, Telenor is looking for a pan-India presence in the country.
The Tatas own 59.5% stake in Tata Teleservices, the unlisted holding company, and 27.9% in the listed Tata Teleservices Maharashtra.
