Indian Prime Minister, Manmohan Singh demanded an effective and early resolution of the lingering Sovereign debt crisis in Europe and urged the developed world to avert the global economy from swiftly slowing down, at the 5th India Brazil South Africa (IBSA) Summit which started on Tuesday. Singh stated that “we hope that effective and early steps will be taken by Europe and other advanced economies to calm the capital and financial markets and prevent the global economy from slipping into a double dip recession.”

He further remarked that developing countries like India, Brazil and South Africa are not immune to the adverse impact of financial turbulence in Europe, United States and Japan. The Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff too urged Euro zone leaders to move quickly to prevent their debt crisis from crippling the global economy and stated that 'we know that a credible accord is needed between the European countries, to stop this crisis going out of control and affecting the world.”

The leaderships of the largest developing democracies on their respective continents, who met in Pretoria for the trilateral IBSA Dialogue Forum, also decided to coordinate their efforts ahead of the crucial G20 meeting at Cannes, to prevent the situation from deteriorating further.

Manmohan Singh also affirmed that India, Brazil and South Africa were united in their efforts to address the deficit in global governance and pushed for UN reforms like enlargement of the UN Security Council to reflect the present day reality. The Prime Minister termed IBSA Trust Fund, to which each country of the grouping contributes $1 million, as a novel initiative through which IBSA countries have been able to share developmental experience with other developing nations in the true spirit of South-South cooperation. Singh told 'we should strengthen IBSA's ownership of the projects executed under the Trust Fund and bring their focus back to what was originally envisaged i.e. Hunger and poverty alleviation.'
