22 May 2013 Evaluate

Bharti Airtel has reportedly received a show cause notice from service tax department for alleged tax evasion of Rs 200 crore. The notice has been served to telecom major for claiming tax credit on towers. The towers according to service tax department are immovable property so there was no credit due to the company.

Bharti Airtel on the other hand has contested the department’s stance saying that towers are not immovable property. The final order has not been passed in the case yet.

Bharti Airtel is a leading integrated telecommunications company with operations in 20 countries across Asia and Africa. The company ranks amongst the top 5 mobile service providers globally in terms of subscribers.
