Fire breaks out at Mangalore Refinery and Petrochemicals’ refinery

Fire broke out at Mangalore Refinery and Petrochemicals’ Phase 2 unit on June 3, 2013. The unit caught fire because of an oil leak during its start up. The situation was under control immediately and the fire was put out in a while. There were no casualties or injuries, and the committee that inspected the unit has ruled out any serious damage.

MRPL is a joint venture oil refinery promoted by Hindustan Petroleum Corporation (HPCL), a public sector company and IRIL & Associates (AV Birla Group). It has a design capacity to process 9.69 million metric tonnes per annum and is the only refinery in India to have two hydrocrackers producing Premium Diesel (High Cetane).
