Indian rupee settled lower on Wednesday in sink with the domestic equity markets that turned choppy at the fag-end of the session. Investors overlooked the report that Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) has said that net direct tax collection grew 21 per cent to Rs 4.62 lakh crore during April 1 to June 17, 2024 period, on higher advance tax mop-up. The first instalment of advance tax, which was due on June 15, showed collections rose 27.34 per cent to Rs 1.48 lakh crore. On the global front, the dollar fell on Wednesday after dismal U.S. retail sales data bolstered expectations of imminent Federal Reserve rate reduction, while sterling dipped slightly ahead of a reading on UK inflation later in the day.

Finally, the rupee ended at 83.44 (Provisional), down by 1 paisa from its previous close of 83.43 on Tuesday. The currency touched a high and low of 83.48 and 83.34 respectively.
