Modi to head BJP's poll panel, announces tallest statue of Sardar Patel

Narendra Modi's rise as the BJP's campaign committee chief has evoked both trepidation and hope in the Congress camp. Hope, because 'Modiphobia' could consolidate minorities in its favour and secular versus communal debate could induce public amnesia about the UPA II's omissions and commissions. Trepidation, because Modi is a master in the game of polarisation, even though his proven acumen in Gujarat may not come up trumps at the national level.

Modi as the BJP's campaign committee head and Rahul Gandhi as the Congress's election coordination committee head have emerged as the two chief protagonists of 2014 elections and Congressmen are divided in their cost-and-benefit analysis. Modi's decision to collect iron from the country's villages is also an attempt to mobilise people from the artisan and backward classes. Incidentally, Modi himself comes from an extremely backward community.

The announcement was made by Rajnath Singh who was flanked by Leaders of Opposition in Parliament Sushma Swaraj and Arun Jaitley, former President M Venkaiah Naidu, General Secretary Ananth Kumar among others. No questions were taken at the media interaction. Samajwadi Party Narendra Modi had no magic to change the fortunes of BJP in Uttar Pradesh in the next general elections and his anointment as BJP's campaign committee chairman will not help the party.
