Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP Om Birla today filed his nomination for the post of Speaker of the 18th Lok Sabha, as the candidate of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA). Meanwhile, Senior Congress MP K Suresh has filed nomination for the Lok Sabha speaker post as INDIA bloc's candidate after the leaders failed to reach a consensus.

The Opposition had agreed to support the NDA's choice of candidate under the condition that the deputy Speaker must be a member of the INDIA bloc. However, apparently, the two sides couldn’t reach an agreement. JD(U) leader and Union minister Rajiv Ranjan Singh alias Lalan Singh told reporters that Birla's name was decided unanimously by all NDA parties.

Earlier, union minister Rajnath Singh met Congress KC Venugopal, DMK's TR Baalu on behalf of the government in a bid to build consensus for the post of Speaker and deputy Speaker. KC Venugopal, however, insisted on securing a commitment for the deputy Speaker's post in return for their support. BJP MP Piyush Goyal said it would have been better to have a consensus candidate and criticised the opposition for putting forth conditions.

The speaker will be selected through election on June 26. This will be the first time that elections will be held for the lower house Speaker. Since independence, the Lok Sabha Speaker and Deputy Speaker have been elected by consensus between the ruling party and the opposition.
