LK Advani's projection as symbol of secularism: Omar Abdullah

Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah today expressed surprise over the projection of LK Advani, who quit all BJP posts yesterday, as a symbol of secularism in NDA by some quarters. Although Omar did not specify as to who he was referring to, the comment seems to be in response to JD-U's stand on reconsidering its ties with the NDA in the wake of elevation of Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi as BJP's poll panel chief for next year's Lok Sabha elections.

A day after the National Executive sent out a clear message with the elevation of Narendra Modi, LK Advani quit all posts in the party on Monday. In the one-page resignation, Advani said, 'For some time I have been finding it difficult to reconcile either with the current functioning of the party, or the direction in which it is going. Most leaders of ours are now concerned just with their personal agendas.'

Advani said the BJP was no longer the 'same idealistic party' created by Shyama Prasad Mookerjee, Deendayal Upadhyaya, Nanaji Deshmukh and Vajpayee. 'All my life I have found working for the Jana Sangh and the Bharatiya Janata Party a matter of great pride and endless satisfaction to myself,' said Advani in his resignation letter.
