Rice sown in 7.94 lakh hectares so far this season

Rice plantation has increased as compared to a week ago. So far, rice has been sown in 7.94 lakh hectares which was 5.23 lakh hectares last week, up by 2.71 lakh hectares. However, the sown area is less as compared to rice planting at same time last year which stood at 8.05 lakh hectares, mainly due to late sowing in Assam and Orissa. However, transplanting of rice has picked up in Andhra Pradesh, Kerala, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu.

Besides, sugarcane has been planted in 42.09 lakh hectares as compared to 46.78 lakh hectares at this time last year. The fall of sugarcane plantation is mainly due to drought in parts of Maharashtra and Karnataka had led to poor planting. Jute and mesta have been planted in 8.11 lakh hectares as compared to 8.02 lakh hectares last year.

Cotton is reported to have been planted in 15.85 lakh hectares as compared to 15.72 lakh hectares at same time last year. The planting of cotton is marginally higher than last year, as farmers in Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka are planting more area under the fibre crop. Further, Oilseeds have been planted in 1.57 lakh hectares as compared to 1.56 lakh hectares at this time last year. So far, Oilseeds acreage has also seen a marginal increase over last year as planting of groundnut and soyabean has commenced in the key growing States of Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh.
