Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla asked MPs not to protest in the area in front of the stairs leading to the Makar Dwar of Parliament after the protest by the INDIA bloc parties.

Leaders of India Block Parties this morning staged a protest against the central government outside Makar Dwar to press for the rollback of 18 per cent Goods and Services Tax (GST) on life and health insurance premium. MPs from various parties including the Trinamool Congress (TMC), Congress, AAP and NCP-Sharadchandra Pawar, among others, participated in the protest on the steps leading to the Makar Dwar with the placards reading ‘Tax terrorism’.

Before the Zero Hour in the house, Om Birla said, ‘It was the collective sentiment of the House that there would be no protest at any gate of the Parliament House. No gate of the Parliament House will be obstructed to ensure smooth entry of members.’ He said it is the responsibility of every member of Parliament to respect this collective sentiment and added that no member and especially any senior member should do anything in the House that lowers their dignity. Meanwhile, TMC member Kalyan Banerjee asked the speaker where the opposition could protest when Mahatma Gandhi's statue, where demonstrations were traditionally held, had been moved to another location.

Slamming central government over GST on life and health insurance, Rahul Gandhi said the Modi government even collected Rs 24,000 crore from millions of common Indians who pay health insurance premiums every year by saving every penny to ensure that they do not have to bow down to anyone in case of a ‘health crisis’ in life. Senior Congress leader Shashi Tharoor said the INDIA bloc parties’ protest against the imposition of 18 per cent GST on life and medical insurance premiums is absolutely justified. Earlier, All India Trinamool Congress (AITMC) leader and MP Sudip Bandopadhyay termed the Centre's 18 per cent GST on medical and health insurance as ‘anti-people’ and said it was adversely affecting the citizens of the country.
