Tata Steel, county’s largest steelmaker likely to shut down its small loss-making construction products business in South Wales. The company has taken this decision because of feeble activity in UK construction and public procurement. Llanwern site in Newport’s construction product business focus on production of highways barrier systems for roads, parapets, floor-decking systems and lightweight frames for a variety of applications. This site employs 70 people.
The business was unable to overcome the continuing economic downturn and has operated at a consistent loss since 2008. The site has already cut production to 80-85% of its annual capacity of 18 million tones from 85-90% in the first half of this year.
