Export of coconut and coconut products reaches record Rs 1,050 crore in 2012-13

The export of coconut and coconut products other than coir and coir products reached a record Rs 1,050 crore in 2012-13. According to the Coconut Development Board (CDB) report, the total export registered a growth of 26% in value terms and 32% in volume terms, compared with the previous financial year. Around 58,000 tonnes of activated carbon worth Rs 550 crore which accounts for 50% of the total export earnings have been exported from the country. North America, South America, Eastern Europe, South East Asia and West Asia are the regions where good quality shell-based activated carbon has got great demand.
 
As per CDB, the country’s trade with the US is increasing in addition to the traditional markets. With effect from January 1, coconut shell based activated carbon is notified under Focus Product Scheme and is eligible for export incentive of 2%. Since the Union Government notified the board as an Export Promotion Council for all coconut products from April 1, 2009, a sizeable quantity of coconut and coconut products is being exported. In the last four years shipments have registered an average growth of 35%.

The CDB currently has around 1,000 registered exporters and by the end of the 12th five-year plan it is eyeing to achieve exports worth Rs 5,000 crore for coconut product.
