National Conference (NC) president Farooq Adbullah announced that that his party has sealed an alliance with Congress for the upcoming election in Jammu and Kashmir.

The announcement came after Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi and Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge met National Conference leadership at Abdullah’s residence. After the meeting Adbullah said the meeting was held in a very cordial atmosphere and the alliance is on track and it will go on well with God's grace. He further added that the alliance has been done on all the 90 seats.

Asked about Gandhi’s assurance earlier in the day that it was the priority of the Congress and the INDIA bloc to restore statehood to Jammu and Kashmir, Farooq Abdullah said, ‘statehood is very important for all of us. This has been promised to us. This state has witnessed bad days and we hope it will be restored with its full powers. For that, we stand together with the INDIA bloc.’ When asked if there are chances for National Conference and PDP to come together for J&K elections, NC chief said, ‘Congress and we (NC) are together. Tarigami sahab (CPM's M.Y. Tarigami) is also with us. I hope that our people are with us so that we can win and do better for the people.’

Rahul Gandhi and Mallikarjun Kharge are on a two-day visit to Jammu and Kashmir to review the party's preparations for the upcoming elections in the union territory and explore a likely alliance with NC. The J&K assembly elections will be held in three phases on September 18, September 25 and October 1 and the results will be announced on October 4.
