The sowing of kharif crops has picked up in the last week and the area sown has surpassed 2012-13 area by 84%, as per reports received from different states. The total sown area now stands at 250.99 lakh hectare as compared to 135.87 lakh hectare at this time last year. Rice has been sown in 39.12 lakh hectare in 2013-14 as compared to 29.66 lakh hectare sown in 2012-13 while Pulses has been sown in 10.52 lakh hectare.
Similarly, Coarse Cereals has been sown in 29.33 lakh hectare in 2013-14 as compared to 5.59 lakh hectare sown in 2012-13 while Oilseeds has been sown in 60.69 lakh hectare in 2013-14 as compared to 11.82 lakh hectare sown in the last year.
Further, Sugarcane, Cotton, Jute & Mesta has been sown in 47.43 lakh hectare, 55.76 lakh hectare and 8.15 lakh hectare in 2013-14 as compared to 49.35 lakh hectare, 31.38 lakh hectare and 8.07 lakh hectare sown respectively in the last year.
