CAI estimates lower production of cotton in 2012-13

The Cotton Association of India (CAI) has lowered its cotton crop estimate to 355.25 lakh bales (lb) for the 2012-13 season compared to 373.25 lb produced in 2011-12. Cotton Season of the country runs from October to September.

CAI projected cotton supply during the season at 423.46 lb that include opening stock balance of around 53 lb. The domestic consumption is estimated at 283 lb with exports at 95 lb and it will leave the closing stock at 45.46 lb.

Arrivals as on June 30 were put at 344.75 lb with the state of Gujarat producing 85.75 lb of cotton in 2012-13 crop season, Andhra Pradesh produced 75 lb, while Maharashtra produced 72 lb. The state of Haryana, Madhya Pradesh, Punjab and Karnataka produced 24 lb, 18 lb, 15.5 lb and 13 lb of cotton respectively.
