An answer to a RTI query revealed on Monday that the Communist Party of India (CPI) has received Rs 31,362,341 funding from various sources in the past five years since 2008. This includes contributions made above the amount of Rs 20,000. The disclosure comes after last month’s Central Information Commission (CIC) order that the political parties are public authorities and they are responsible to Right to Information queries within six weeks. The party disclosed the funding even though it did not approve of CIC verdict bringing political parties under the ambit of the RTI Act.

The similar petitions were sent to several political parties, including six public- authorities under RTI Act. Those parties are the Congress, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), Communist Party of India - Marxist (CPI-M), CPI and the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) ) - have been substantially funded and have the 'character of public authority' under the RTI Act.
