The sowing of kharif crops has picked up and the area sown has crossed 2012-13 area, as per reports received from different states. The total sown area as on July 19 now stands at 620.22 lakh hectare as compared to 506.21 lakh hectare at this time last year. Rice has been sown in 154.85 lakh hectare in 2013-14 as compared to 139.42 lakh hectare sown in 2012-13 while Pulses has been sown in 31.62 lakh hectare compared to 20.54 lakh hectares sown in last year.
Similarly, Coarse Cereals has been sown in 126.64 lakh hectare in 2013-14 as compared to 95.43 lakh hectares sown in 2012-13, while Oilseeds has been sown in 149.82 lakh hectare in 2013-14 as compared to 108.81 lakh hectare sown in the last year.
Further, Sugarcane, Cotton, Jute & Mesta has been sown in 48.45 lakh hectare, 100.55 lakh hectare and 8.27 lakh hectare in 2013-14 as compared to 50.04 lakh hectare, 83.74 lakh hectare and 8.22 lakh hectare sown respectively in the last year.
