Delhi Assembly election dates announced: Voting on February 5

07 Jan 2025 Evaluate

The Election Commission of India (ECI) has announced that the 9th Delhi Assembly Elections will be held on February 5 in a single phase for all its 70 constituencies. The vote counting will be held on February 8.

The ECI further announced that the date of issuance of the Gazette notification will be January 10. The last date for nominations will be January 17, while January 18 will be the last date for scrutiny of nominations. The last date for withdrawal of candidature will be January 20. Bypolls to two Assembly constituencies - Milkipur in Uttar Pradesh and Erode in Tamil Nadu - will also be held on February 5. The announcement was made during a press conference held in the Plenary Hall of Vigyan Bhawan, New Delhi, addressed by Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Rajiv Kumar and Election Commissioners Gyanesh Kumar and Dr. Sukhbir Singh Sandhu.

Speaking at a press conference, Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Rajiv Kumar said there are over 13,000 polling stations in Delhi for the 2025 assembly elections. He also said they have assured minimum facilities for a smooth voting process.

Rajiv Kumar further emphasized the transparency and rigor of the process governing electoral roll maintenance. He rejected allegations of manipulation in the electoral roll, asserting that no deletion occurs without thorough documentation, field verification, and an opportunity for the affected individual to be heard. He also said India will soon create a new record of one billion-plus voters.

The ongoing term of the Delhi government is set to end on February 23, 2025. Delhi Assembly elections will witness a three-cornered fight between the BJP, Congress and Aam Aadmi Party. The AAP will be aiming to win the polls for a third consecutive term. Congress will be keen to regain the National Capital. On the other hand, the BJP, which is playing up the corruption charges against the former Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, will be expecting to win the Assembly elections.
