The sowing of kharif crops has picked up and the acreage has been more than the 2012-13 number, as per reports received from different states. The total sown area as on July 26 now stands at 747.78 lakh hectare as compared to 635.05 lakh hectare at this time last year. The area coverage under oilseeds, particularly in groundnut and soybean, is higher compared to the previous kharif season due to timely onset of monsoon and widespread distribution of rainfall in oilseeds growing regions. Pulses sown area has increase by 90% compared to last year.
Rice has been sown in 196.38 lakh hectare in 2013-14 as compared to 184.24 lakh hectare sown in 2012-13 while Pulses has been sown in 73.62 lakh hectare compared to 39.52 lakh hectares sown in last year.
Similarly, Coarse Cereals has been sown in 148.82 lakh hectare in 2013-14 as compared to 117.48 lakh hectares sown in 2012-13, while Oilseeds has been sown in 167.15 lakh hectare in 2013-14 as compared to 138.30 lakh hectare sown in the last year.
Further, Sugarcane, Cotton, Jute & Mesta has been sown in 48.48 lakh hectare, 105.06 lakh hectare and 8.27 lakh hectare in 2013-14 as compared to 50.04 lakh hectare, 97.24 lakh hectare and 8.22 lakh hectare sown respectively in the last year.
