India’s CPI-inflation eases to 9.64% in July

Giving some respite to the frenzied Indian policy makers, country’s retail inflation showed some sign of slowing down in July. As per the Central Statistics Office (CSO), Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation, provisional annual inflation rate based on all India general Consumer Price Indices (CPI) combined came down to 9.64% in July on point to point basis as against 9.87% in the month of June. Food prices for consumers rose an annual 11.24% in July, slower than an annual rise of 11.84% in June.

Further, provisional CPI numbers for rural, urban and combined were at 133.8, 132.2 and 133.1in July 2013 respectively. The CPI inflation eased sharply in rural area and declined to 9.14% in July from 9.63% recorded in the previous month. For urban areas, retail inflation rose to 10.26 % in the month under review as compared to 10.13% recorded in the previous month. While, inflation rates (final) for rural and urban areas for June 2013 are 9.63% and 10.13% respectively.

Among all the constituents that make the CPI, vegetables recorded the highest inflation of 16.40 % in July. Beside this, inflation in cereals and pulses grew by 16.03% and 5.55% in the reported month. The prices of egg, fish and meat rose sharply at 13.82 % in July. The overall food and beverages segment saw an inflation of 11.24%, while the prices of fuel and light increased by 8.39 percent in the reported month. The inflation in clothing and footwear segment stood at 9.39 % during the month.

India, so far, has the highest retail inflation among the emerging economies - Brazil, Russia, China, and South Africa. RBI keeps a close watch on the inflation data to decide its monetary policy. However, unlike most central banks, the Reserve Bank of India mainly uses the wholesale price index (WPI) for setting up its monetary policy. Meanwhile, the Ministry of Labour and Employment, Government of India has decided to prepare a new series of Consumer Price Index for Industrial Workers.
