Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha and Congress MP Rahul Gandhi strongly disagreed with the process of appointment of new Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar and called it as ‘disrespectful’ and ‘discourteous’.

Rahul Gandhi criticized the decision of Prime Minister Narendra Modi government to exclude the Chief Justice of India from the selection committee. He said that by violating the Supreme Court order and ‘removing’ the Chief Justice from the selection committee, the government has ‘exacerbated the concerns of hundreds of millions of voters over the integrity of our electoral process’. LoP further said that it is his duty to uphold ideals of Babasaheb Ambedkar and hold the government to account.

The government appointed Former IAS officer Gyanesh Kumar as the new CEC and Haryana Chief Secretary Dr Vivek Joshi as Election Commissioner by the President on Monday night. Gyanesh Kumar became the first CEC to be appointed under the amended law that replaced the Chief Justice with the Home Minister on the selection panel.

Gandhi, who is part of the three-member selection panel alongside Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah, had opposed the appointment process, arguing that it should not proceed while a Supreme Court challenge regarding the selection law is pending. The court is set to hear the case this week. The appointment has sparked a fresh political controversy, with the opposition accusing the government of attempting to exert control over the country’s electoral machinery.
