Mayawati’s cabinet gives green signal for division of UP into four parts

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati has received her cabinet’s approval for division of state into four parts. Mayawati will be tabling the same during the winter session of Parliament starting November 21, 2011. The four parts will be - Poorvanchal (East UP), Paschhimanchal (West UP), Bundelkhand and Awadh (central UP).

According to opposition parties, this is a political stunt and an attempt by Mayawati to divert people’s attention from the corruption and other charges against her ahead of the Assembly elections. However, the Chief Minister stated that since her tenure as state’s chief minister she has been requesting Central government to consider the same. She had also demanded for Rs 80,000 crore package for development of east UP and Bundelkhand but the Centre had done nothing although repeated reminders were sent to Prime Minister.

Uttar Pradesh being largest state in country has lacked overall development despite the fact that most of nation’s Prime Ministers were from UP. Mayawati said that because of the wrong policies of earlier state and central governments led by Congress, BJP, Samajwadi Party and others, the state could not witness all-round development and lagged behind.  Reorganisation of state will enable all-round balanced development of over 16% of nation’s population which resides in UP.
