Union Minister Kiren Rijiju tabled the contentious Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2024, in the Lok Sabha (LS) today, which sparked strong opposition and witnessed a showdown between the government and Opposition. The bill seeks to amend the Waqf Act of 1995 to improve administration and management of Waqf properties by introducing significant changes such as updating definitions, enhancing registration processes, and increasing the role of technology.
Introducing the bill, Union Minority Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju said, ‘If we had not introduced this amendment today, even the Parliament building we are sitting in could have been claimed as Waqf property. If PM Modi Govt did not come into power, several properties would have been de-notified.’ He said the consultation process of the Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) was the largest ever exercise carried out by a parliamentary panel in India's democratic history.
Rijiju further stated that the Lok Sabha’s business advisory committee (BAC), chaired by Speaker Om Birla and comprising leaders from all major parties, has agreed to an eight-hour debate, with the option to extend it based on the House’s consensus. He also accused the opposition of misleading Muslims for the last 70 years for ‘vote bank politics.’
While, the Opposition strongly attacked the Centre over the Waqf Amendment Bill tabled in Lok Sabha. Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi said, ‘This bill is not just about administrative changes; it is a deliberate effort to dilute the Constitution, defame minority communities, divide Indian society, and ultimately disenfranchise minorities.’ Congress leader KC Venugopal said that the Centre was ‘bulldozing the legislation’.
Samajwadi Party MP Akhilesh Yadav termed it a tactic by BJP to ‘cover up its shortcomings’. Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin wrote a letter to the Prime Minister urging the Central Government to completely withdraw the proposed Waqf Bill 2024.
Amid the showdown, Speaker Om Birla assured that amendments from both government and opposition received balanced consideration from him.
