Onion exports plunge by 81% in August

The export of Onion during August 2013 declined by 81% and stood at 29,247 tonnes, compared to 1,56,283 tonnes in August 2012 after the government imposed curbs on the overseas sale to improve domestic supply and check prices. On August 14, the government has fixed minimum onion export price of $650 per tonne to restrict shipments and control prices. In term of value, Onion shipments dropped to Rs 125.46 crore from Rs 164.92 crore in the review period.

During the April-August period of current fiscal, export of Onion reduced and was reported at 6,97,028 tonnes compared to 8,50,634 tonnes during the same period of last year, down by 18%. However, in term of value Onion shipments rose sharply to Rs 1,341 crore compared to Rs 844 crore in the same period.
