Govt prioritizes clearance of Lokpal Bill during Winter Session

The winter session of Parliament to take-off from November 22, 2011 is set to pass 31 Bills.  Government has disclosed its agenda for the winter session and cited that passing highly-publicized Lokpal Bill will be on priority. 'Government is determined to pass the (Lokpal) Bill. Government stands committed to root out corruption. It may not be done through one law,' said Parliamentary Affairs Minister Pawan Bansal.

Social crusader Anna Hazare’s warning to go on a hunger strike again if the government does not pass the bill in the winter session has coerced government to prioritize the same. The 21-day sitting of Parliament will also include passing Bills like Food Security Bill, Public Interest Disclosure & Protection to Persons Making the Disclosures Bill, the Judicial Standards & Accountability Bill.

The much hyped Land Acquisition Bill, however, is not included in the list of 31 Bills; Bansal said “I have not been able to speak to the chairperson of the Standing Committee examining the Bill. I am told that only three-four meetings of the Committee have been held so far. It is taking time.” This Bill holds significance for ruling government, as Congress’ General Secretary Rahul Gandhi had visited and supported the farmers of hatta Parsaul in Greater Noida where farmers had agitated against acquisition of their land by the Government. He had even accused the Opposition of deliberately delaying the Bill.
