Tata Steel to raise top-grade flat products output from Kalinganagar

19 Jul 2011 Evaluate

Tata Steel expects its Kalinganagar plant to boost its production of superior quality flat steel products. Demand for superior quality flat products in India is rising. The Kalinganagar project will complement Tata Steel's existing production facilities through production of premium grades like auto-advanced high strength steel, high-end galvanised coil and cold rolled coil for general engineering.

The company also expects the first phase of the Orissa plant with three million tonnes per annum (mtpa) capacity to go on stream by the beginning of 2014. The second phase with a capacity of three mtpa is expected to be completed by March 2015.

The Kalinganagar project has received all necessary statutory clearances from the relevant regulatory authorities to set up the plant. The construction site is also being connected via rail linkages to the nearest railway station and the Dharma Port to enable transfer of raw material and finished products once the plant is operational. Tata Steel added that the power requirement for the project would be met through two captive power plants to be set up by Industrial Energy Ltd, a joint venture between Tata Steel and Tata Power.
