Decision on Genetically Modified seeds cannot be taken under pressure: Tariq Anwar

18 Sep 2013 Evaluate

The Union Minister of State for Agriculture, Tariq Anwar after inaugurating Third National Crop Convention, 2013 in Patna stated that the decision on Genetically Modified (GM) seeds cannot be taken under pressure from abroad. The two-day Crop convention was organized by the Indian Chamber of Commerce. The minister added that it would be adopted only after satisfactory results of scientific tests at various levels. There were concerns raised over lifting suspension on GM seeds.

For issues related to adoption of GM seeds the Supreme Court (SC) had constituted a committee to look into the matter. The committee has presented its report and future decision will be taken on the basis of it. Last year in October, on recommendation of the Supreme Court Technical Expert Committee (TEC), a 10-year moratorium on all field trials of GM crops in India was imposed.

It is anticipated that by 2030 the country’s population will exceed China population and in such scenario there is need to increase the food productivity. However, China which has almost same amount of land as we have produces double the amount of crops than us.
