The US markets ended lower on Thursday. Initially, the release of upbeat earnings from tech giants Meta Platforms (META) and Microsoft (MSFT) uplifted the trading sentiments. However, buying interest waned as traders opted to book some profits following the recent rally which saw the Nasdaq and the S&P 500 closing to their record high. Besides, traders remained cautious ahead of President Donald Trump's tariff deadline of August 1 and awaits for more clues on latest developments on the trade front. Traders also paid no heed towards report released by the Commerce Department showing consumer prices in the U.S. increased in line with street estimates in the month of June.
On the sectoral front, semiconductor stocks witnessed substantial selling pressure over the course of the session, with the Philadelphia Semiconductor Index plunging by 3.1 percent after ending Wednesday's trading at its best closing level in a year. Considerable weakness also emerged among pharmaceutical stocks, dragging the NYSE Arca Pharmaceutical Index down by 2.9 percent to a two-month closing low.
Dow Jones Industrial slid 330.30 points or 0.74 percent to 44,130.98, Nasdaq edged down 7.23 points or 0.03 percent to 21,122.45 and S&P 500 fell 23.51 points or 0.37 percent to 6,339.39.
