US markets end lower on Friday amid tariff concerns

U.S. markets closed lower on Friday, amid concerns about the economic impact of President Donald Trump's tariffs, as the White House announced new tariff rates on dozens of countries. The new tariffs range from just 10 percent to as high as 41 percent, and the White House said a 40 percent levy will be imposed on goods that have been transshipped to evade applicable duties. Additionally, sentiment remained downbeat, with the Labor Department report showing much weaker-than-expected job growth in July. The Labor Department said non-farm payroll employment rose by 73,000 jobs in July, while street had expected employment to jump by 110,000 jobs. The report also showed much larger than normal downward revisions to job growth in May and June, with employment in the two months increasing by a combined 258,000 fewer jobs than previously reported.

On the sectorial front, the Airline stocks posted some of the market's worst performances of the day, with the NYSE Arca Airline Index plunging by 4.3 percent. Substantial weakness was also visible among oil service stocks amid a steep drop by the price of crude, as reflected by the 3.5 percent plunge by the Philadelphia Oil Service Index. 

Nasdaq declined 472.32 points or 2.24 percent to 20,650.13, Dow Jones Industrial Average decreased 542.4 points or 1.23 percent to 43,588.58, and S&P 500 fell 101.38 points or 1.6 percent to 6,238.01.
