The INDIA bloc parties united on August 06, 2025, to intensify pressure on the Modi government for a discussion on the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of voter rolls in Bihar during the ongoing Monsson session of the Parliament.
At a joint press conference at Vijay Chowk, the Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge Congress president Mallikarjun emphasised that the Opposition wants to present its suggestions on the matter, but the government is not allowing a discussion. Kharge claimed that minorities, Dalits and adivasis are facing the risk of losing their voting rights. Referring to the statements from the government and Chair in both Houses that the functioning of the Election Commission of India cannot be discussed in Parliament as it is an independent constitutional body, Kharge said everything under the sun can be discussed.
Trinamool Congress leader and MP from West Bengal, Sagarika Ghose said they will continue protests inside and outside Parliament over the SIR issue, and also raise concerns over ‘attacks’ on Bengali-speaking people in BJP ruled states. Ghose also alleged that ‘oppression’ is being carried out against Bangla-speaking people.
RJD MP Manoj Jha termed the SIR a ‘dacoity.’ He alleged that the votes of Dalits, OBCs, and other backward communities are being snatched by this exercise. Jha said Parliament is a space in democracy where issues of the people are deliberated and discussed. This government is not allowing it to happen.
The INDIA bloc also announced a protest march to the Election Commission of India (ECI) office in Delhi on August 11, opposing the SIR exercise. The joint press conference was attended by leaders from different INDIA bloc parties, including AAP’s Sandeep Pathak, DMK's Tiruchi Siva, CPI(M)'s John Brittas, Shiv Sena (UBT)'s Sanjay Raut, among others.
