ONGC Videsh, the overseas arm of state-owned energy explorer Oil & Natural Gas Corporation, plans to raise its stake in oil and gas acreages in Brazil and Venezuela to counter China's growing influence in the region. The company is also scouting for experienced equity partners that can help it better exploit hydrocarbon resources in its acreage in Venezuela. The move comes just two months after OVL bought 20% stake in the gas rich Rovuma basin in Mozambique, one of the most coveted new energy assets in the world, for $5.11 billion.
Block BC-10 is located in the Campos Basin, about 120 km southwest of Vitoria City. Last month, Petrobras had announced sale of its stake in oil and gas acreages across Brazil to Sinochem Group for $2.1 billion. The most significant among these was BC-10, where the Ostra field pumps close to 21,000 barrels of oil a day. Royal Dutch Shell Plc, which holds 50% stake, is the operator of the block and, thus, holds the right of first refusal to Petrobras' stake sale offer. In Venezuela, where OVL has 11% stake in Carabobo-I project, the company may exercise its preemptive rights over the 11% stake that Malaysian oil and gas company Petronas put on block last month.
