Nifty ends significantly lower amid Trump’s tariff jitters

Indian equity benchmark -- Nifty -- ended significantly lower on Friday amid Trump’s tariff jitters. Index made a gap down start and continued its trade in red terrain after US President Donald Trump announced 100 percent tariff on imported branded drugs, 25 percent tariff on imports of all heavy-duty trucks and 50 percent tariff on kitchen cabinets. Trump also said he would start charging a 30 percent tariff on upholstered furniture next week. After the announcement, index saw a huge selling pressure in pharmaceuticals and IT stocks. Traders avoided risky bids ahead of further developments over Trump decision. Besides, persistent foreign fund outflow dampened investor sentiments. Foreign institutional investor offloaded equity worth Rs 4,995.42 on Thursday, according to exchange data. In second half of the session, index extended its losses till the end of the session and end below 24,700 mark. Market participants took note of Crisil Intelligence in its note has said that US President Donald Trump's move to levy higher fees for granting the H-1B visas will impact Indian IT majors' profit margins by only 0.20%.

All sectorial indices ended in red. The top gainers from the F&O segment were Larsen & Toubro, Torrent Pharmaceuticals and Tata Motors. On the other hand, the top losers were Vodafone Idea, Laurus Labs and HFCL. In the index option segment, maximum OI continues to be seen in the 24900 - 25100 calls and 24400 - 24600 puts indicating this is the trading range expectation.
