The US markets ended lower on Wednesday as traders remained on sidelines after the streaming giant Netflix (NFLX) reported weaker than expected third quarter earnings, citing a dispute with Brazilian tax authorities. Besides, investors took a cautious approach after US President Donald Trump’s recent remarks fuelled uncertainty about US-China trade relations. Trump said he expects to be able to reach a good deal with Chinese President Xi Jinping but also suggested a meeting between the two leaders may not happen.

On the sectoral front, significant selling pressure has been seen in semiconductor stocks with the Philadelphia Semiconductor Index tumbling by 2.4 percent. Retail, housing and networking stocks also saw notable weakness on the day, while energy stocks bucked the downtrend amid a sharp increase by the price of crude oil.

Dow Jones Industrial Average slid 334.33 points or 0.71 percent to 46,590.41, Nasdaq slumped 213.67 points or 0.93 percent to 22,740.40 and S&P 500 fell 35.95 points or 0.53 percent to 6,699.40.
