The US markets ended lower on Monday as valuation concerns weighed on investors’ sentiments ahead of the release of quarterly results from Nvidia. The strength of Nvidia's results and its guidance could have a significant impact on the markets amid recent concerns about an AI bubble. Traders were also looking ahead to the release of U.S. economic data that had been delayed due to the recently ended government shutdown. Additionally, market participants took a cautious stance as reports on factory orders and the U.S. trade deficit in August are due to be released in the coming days along with the monthly jobs report for September. Meanwhile, the Commerce Department kicked off the release its delayed data with the release of a report unexpectedly showing a modest increase by construction spending in the month of August.
On the sectoral front, airline stocks have shown a significant move to the downside, with the NYSE Arca Airline Index falling by 1.6 percent. Moreover, brokerage, housing and retail stocks saw notable weakness, while biotechnology stocks showed a strong move to the upside.
Dow Jones Industrial Average tumbled 557.24 points or 1.18 percent to 46,590.24, S&P 500 slumped 61.70 points or 0.92 percent to 6,672.41 and Nasdaq slid 192.51 points or 0.84 percent to 22,708.07.
