The US markets closed mostly up on Wednesday, with government shutdown entering its ninth day. President Obama pressed House Speaker John Boehner to reopen the government and raise the debt ceiling, saying he wouldn’t talk with his political opponents until those points are settled. Boehner shot back that Obama’s position was unsustainable and that he was demanding unconditional surrender from Republicans. Besides, House leaders met in a fresh sign that lawmakers are trying to resolve the government shutdown, as they also stare down the looming deadline for raising the US debt limit. House Speaker John Boehner and Majority Leader Eric Cantor met with Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi and Minority Whip Steny Hoyer in Boehner’s office suite in the Capitol.

Meanwhile, according to the minutes of the meeting released, most members of the Federal Reserve still thought that it would be appropriate to scale back its stimulus program this year, even as the central bankers decided to hold off moving in mid-September. A majority of Fed officials arrived at the meeting still thinking that it would be appropriate to begin tapering the $85 billion bond purchase program this year and end it completely by the middle of 2014. The minutes showed that the majority who favored not scaling back the purchases thought that a taper could trigger additional, unwarranted tightening of financial market conditions. The Fed policy committee is scheduled to hold its next meeting on October 29 - 30.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average added 26.45 points or 0.18 percent to 14,803.00, the S&P 500 was up 0.95 points or 0.06 percent to 1,656.40, while Nasdaq dropped 17.06 points or 0.46 percent to 3,677.78.
