US markets end lower ahead of Fed’s monetary decision

The US markets ended lower on Monday as some traders opted to cash-in on recent gains made by the markets which saw the Nasdaq and S&P 500 reach their best closing levels in a month. Besides, risk sentiment dimmed on Wall Street ahead of Federal Reserve's (Fed) monetary policy decision on December 10. With the Fed widely expected to lower interest rates by another quarter point, market participants are likely to pay close attention to the accompanying statement for clues about the likelihood of further rate cuts next year. On the sectoral front, gold stocks moved sharply lower over the course of the session, dragging the NYSE Arca Gold Bugs Index down by 2.1 percent. Besides, biotechnology stocks witnessed selling pressure, as reflected by the 1.6 percent loss posted by the NYSE Arca Biotechnology Index. Utilities, natural gas and healthcare stocks also saw notable weakness, while networking, computer hardware and semiconductor stocks saw some strength on the day.

Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 215.67 points or 0.45 percent to 47,739.32, S&P 500 decreased 23.89 points or 0.35 percent to 6,846.51 and Nasdaq edged down 32.22 points or 0.14 percent to 23,545.90.
