MTNL to invest Rs 400 crore to increase 3G mobile Internet speed

In a bid to increase 3G mobile Internet speed by up to six times, Mahanagar Telephone Nigam (MTNL) is planning to invest about Rs 400 crore. The company also plans to enhance the coverage of 2G network.

In this regard, the company has floated tender for enhancing 2G and 3G coverage in the National Capital Region. At present, the maximum speed of data download on MTNL’s 3G networks based on HSDPA technology is about 3.6 megabit per second (mbps). It plans to increase that to 21.1 Mbps by using HSPA+ technology.

MTNL was set up by the Government of India to upgrade the quality of telecom services, expand the telecom network, and introduce new services and to raise revenue for telecom development needs of India's key metros -- Delhi and Mumbai.
