In a bid to improve sales numbers and margins in this fiercely competitive sector, Bharti Airtel has significantly raised rentals of 2G data plans over the past week. The company’s Delhi and Mumbai customers will now get only 525 MB of free data when they pay Rs 125 for a 2G data plan while 1 GB data will be available for Rs 154.
Recently, the company increased international call rates by up to 80% this month on account of depreciation in rupee. The standard call rates to countries like the US, UK and Canada had been raised to Rs 8 per minute from Rs 6.40 per minute earlier.
Airtel is India’s largest telecom company with 192.22 million subscribers as of August-end. The company had a market capitalisation of Rs 1.28 lakh crore as on October 1, 2013 and it owns seven operational data centres across the country. Out of them, two are in Noida, one each in Chennai, Bangalore, Pune, Bhubaneswar and Mumbai.
